Accessibility of biocides in drinking water and surface waters: natural occurrence and relevance for human exposure. Of the individual biocides routinely detected in drinking water, none is considered a priority or an emerging contaminant. Although the presence of some biocides in drinking water is generally well known, much less is known about the occurrence and distribution of the other substances. In this work, the results of several national surveys on the natural occurrence and presence of selected biocides in drinking water are presented. Compared to other compounds, levels of most biocides are below the reported maximum levels, but they can exceed those levels in some water sources. Surface waters are more frequently contaminated than drinking waters, especially by nitroimidazoles and metal salts. In order to know the hazard posed by these compounds, it is important to understand their fate and the different scenarios in which they may be present in the environment. Therefore, biocide distribution in the environment was studied in two ecosystems: rivers and estuaries. River water can represent a major source of exposure to biocides, as some biocides are not efficiently removed during wastewater treatment. However, the biocides considered in this work were mainly found in the dissolved fraction of the water column.
